This tutorial will show you how to set up Linksys Smart Wi-Fi Routers using Smart Setup.
A QUICK TIP: If you are unsure about the type of Internet connection you have, get in touch with your Internet Service Provider (ISP).
Linksys routers can be set up using the computer that is registered to your ISP by performing four (4) procedures:
- Connecting to the Internet and verifying its status
- Interconnecting devices
- LEDs on the router should be checked
- Setting up a Linksys router for Cable Internet connection
QUICK TIP: To reconfigure an older router, reset it to factory defaults. Hold down the Reset button on your router for 10 seconds to do this. Most routers have a Reset button at the back.
Connect the Ethernet cable from the computer to the Cable modem to verify the Internet connection is active. You may proceed to the next step if your computer is getting an Internet connection. Otherwise, you should contact your Internet service provider.
It is important to note that some Cable modems have their USB ports configured by the ISP to provide your computer with Internet access. You will not be able to use an Ethernet connection if the physical connection is through a USB port. Check with your ISP to make sure the modem’s Ethernet port is configured.

Click the MAC Address Clone button under the Setup tab.
Media Access Control (MAC) addresses are unique identifiers assigned to each computer’s network adapter. A cable ISP uses this to authenticate subscribers so they can connect to the Internet.
You must therefore enable the MAC Address Clone feature on your Linksys router for it to work with your ISP. Thus, your ISP will be able to identify your router as the computer that has the registered MAC address.
Choosing Enabled and clicking Clone My PC’s MAC will do.
The settings will be saved when you click Save.
Establishing a connection to the Internet
The Internet status should be active once the MAC Address Clone feature is enabled. Checking the status of the Internet Connection can be accomplished as follows.
Make certain that Automatic Configuration – DHCP is selected as the Internet Connection Type.
Select Status from the menu.
The IP address of the Internet should be checked. If it contains numbers, it indicates that the router is properly configured. Click on Release IP Address and then Renew IP Address if the Internet IP Address is showing 0.0.0.0.
The DHCP release and renewal buttons on the Wireless-B and Wireless-G routers must be clicked. Internet access should be available now. You should power cycle the computer, router, and modem if it doesn’t.
You should be cautious when power cycling a cable modem. Cable TV and phone services are bundled with cable modems. It is also possible for cable modems to have backup batteries that prevent them from turning off even if the power adapter is disconnected. You can power cycle your modem by consulting your ISP.
In order to complete a powercycle:
Shut down the modem.
You can shut down your computer after unplugging the router’s power adapter.
Wait for the modem’s lights to go steady after it is turned on.
The router needs to be turned on first, then the computer needs to be turned on after the router lights are steady. Hopefully, now you have access to the Internet. Your ISP may need to reconfigure the modem if you cannot go online.
